Volunteer Appreciation Month

April is Volunteer Appreciation Month and we know that volunteers spend countless hours taking care of their troops and their co-leaders. Between cookie sales, transitioning to virtual meetings, and navigating the world’s changes, your hard work is appreciated! Now is the time to take care of you! We’ve gathered a few resources that focus on self-appreciation:

Physical activity, such as yoga, is a great way to connect with your body and get the blood flowing!

  • Check out local yoga studio 5 Boro Power Yoga , which offers free yoga classes to all levels on Sundays at 4:15, and Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10:15am!
  • DownDog App is offering free yoga classes until June 1st, and is free for students and teachers until July 1st.
  • Only have 30 minutes? PopSugar has a great 30-minute Power Yoga Flow!

Mental well-being is just as important as physical, keep reading for a few ways to unwind your mind:

  • Meditation can help calm the mind in times of stress or anxiety and can be done almost anywhere. Simply find a comfortable position, close your eyes, and focus on your breath. You can set a timer, listen to meditations on youtube, or download a free meditation app like ‘Let’s Meditate’
  • Journaling is a great way to get your thoughts onto paper and gain some perspective. It can be a tool to release negative thoughts or to remember the good things in life. Use a notebook, your notes app, or a Google Doc and let the words flow freely. Need a prompt? Here are twenty prompts listed by Psychology Today. Or simply write down 3 things you noticed today – there is no wrong way to journal!
  • Take a course at Yale University (for free!) on the Science of Well-Being. Learn about the ways we think and how we can increase our own happiness.
  • Together, Apart’ a podcast described as a “part guide, part reminder of the resiliency of the human spirit” takes a look at real people’s stories as their lives have changed in the past weeks. Remember, we are all in this together.

Finally, here a few things to check out just because!

  • NPR offers quite a few interesting podcasts, two notable ones are “Wow in The World” which dives into the wonder of the world around us, and “How I Built This” which looks into the stories of the world’s innovators and risk-takers.
  • Wonder what wild ospreys, moon jellyfish, or manatees are up to? Find out by checking out livestreams from zoos, sanctuaries, and wildlife centers all over the world on Explore.
  • TED Talks inspire us, educate us, and now they make us laugh. TED has put together a list of their funniest talks, watch them all here!
